PB Pipe / Polybutylene Pipe / Polybutylane Pipe / PEX Pipe
The Bad: PB Pipes / Polybutylene Pipes / Polybutylane Pipes are the gray plastic pipes (but can be blue or black) used around 1978 through 1995. Chlorine in our water causes the pipe and connections to become brittle and eventually leak. This type of piping was used in the sun-belt areas of the US (like Arizona) as household water mains and interior plumbing. Class-action lawsuits helped reduce the financial pain of the damage caused by leaking pipes. Note: some plumbers installed copper stubs for visible fittings, but PB pipe in the walls and attics. This is just a major problem waiting to happen typically starting within 10 – 15 years.
The OK: CPVC is chlorinated polyvinylchloride has many of the features of PEX piping except flexibility, freeze resistance, and increased cost. Use PEX for the best overall repipes.
The Good: PEX Pipe, the flexible red (hot) and blue (cold) water pipes, is made from cross-linked Polyethylene and used successfully for many years. PEX offers ease of installation, relative low cost, and excellent water pressure, temperature, and water resistance features.
Remember - inspectors can only tell if you have PB pipe / Polybutylene pipe / Polybutylane pipe in your home – NOT IF IT IS SERVICEABLE.
